Talk – Art and its Market
Dirk Boll and Silke Hohmann in conversation
Five years after the profound global financial crisis, Isaac Julien released Playtime in 2013, which has hardly lost any of its relevance today. In his film installation Playtime, Julien presents different protagonists of international capital flows. With the appearance of an art dealer and an auctioneer, Julien focuses on the relationship between art and capital.
Hardly any other market system has changed as profoundly in the last decade as the art market. The role and influence of museums and private collectors, art critics, and influencers, as well as new forms of digital art and marketing channels are in constant flux.
Dirk Boll, a member of the board of Christie’s London, and journalist Silke Hohmann discuss the rapidly changing art market.

Artist’s Talk – Anawana Haloba in conversation with Kerryn Greenberg
Anawana Haloba’s projects, which incorporate sound, sculpture, film, and performance, typically develop from periods of extensive research, sketching, and writing poetry. Born in Zambia and based between Oslo and Livingstone, Haloba often uses her own body as a point of departure to interrogate questions of politics, history, migration, memory, otherness, and identity.
Her multimedia installation Close-Up, 2013-2016, which occupies the central rotunda of the PalaisPopulaire, is the starting point for The Struggle of Memory and will be on view during Part 1 and 2 of the exhibition. Curator, Kerryn Greenberg talks with the artist about her practice, particularly her work with sound, and the importance of preserving indigenous languages and oral histories in Africa.

Curator’s Tour – Kerryn Greenberg
The Struggle of Memory takes as its starting point acquisitions Deutsche Bank has made over the past decade, many of which are by artists from Africa and/or are of African descent.
In her selection, curator Kerryn Greenberg focuses on works engaging with personal narratives, alternative perspectives, and lesser-known stories, making clear that the struggle against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.
Greenberg is the Associate Curator of the 14th Gwangju Biennale and Co-Director of New Curators, a paid one-year curatorial training program in London for individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Curator’s Tour – Isaac Julien: PLAYTIME
Philipp Bollmann, curator of the Wemhöner Collection, will give a tour of the exhibition "Isaac Julien: PLAYTIME" that he curated. The show focuses on Playtime, a film that Isaac Julien presented for the first time five years after the profound global financial and banking crisis in 2008. Celebrated for his compelling lyrical films and his video art installations, Isaac Julien is one of the leading artists working in film and video today. In Playtime Julien addresses a fundamental question: can capital be rendered visible? The prelude of the exhibition forms a series of large scale photographs that were made in close relation to the film itself. During the guided tour, participants will have the opportunity to talk directly with the curator and ask questions about the work.
