In his series Certain Matins, photographer Mohamed Camara shows us intimate moments from everyday life in Bamako, the capital of Mali. On a wall we see the shadows of a woman and a man facing each other. But what's going on? Are they about to kiss? Are they arguing? Is the scene staged, or is this a snapshot by Camara?

It's often only in combination with their titles that Camara's photographs can be fully appreciated. Take the shot of his young cousin posing outside in an adult woman's dress. The protagonist in this bizarre scene could just as easily be an abuse victim. But the light-hearted title clears things up: "Some mornings, my cousin involves me in things I don't understand!"

In the third picture, the subject is praying. It's impossible to tell whether it is a man or a woman, because while the hands are brightly lit by the morning sun, the upper body is in shadow. The contrast of light and dark suggests that prayer can be seen as bridging the gap between the visible and the invisible. Mohamed Camara came across a book about photography when he was sixteen and began taking phtographs with a borrowed camera shortly thereafter. His first series Chambres Maliennes (Malian Rooms) attracted considerable international attention after it was exhibited in Paris in 2002 when he was only 17 years old.
